What is the difference between hemp and marijuana?
Both hemp and marijuana plants are members of the cannabis genus of plants; hemp plants produce less than 0.3% THC. Marijuana plants produce more than 0.3% THC. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the high sensation. Hemp produces very low levels of THC (less than 0.3% THC) and is legally used to produce topical products, food supplements, textiles and an endless supply of other products. Hemp plants are also used to produce compounds such as CBD (Cannabidiol).
What is CBD?
CBD is a molecule is produced by Cannabis Sativa plants. CBD is a phytocannabinoid. Cannabinoids bind to cannabinoid receptors in the body (similar to a lock and key). Some research suggests that CBD causes a reduction in your body’s inflammatory response and increases levels of your body’s own pain-relieving endocannabinoids.Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids made naturally by your body versus phytocannabinoids (CBD) are made by plants. There is growing evidence that the cannabinoid system regulates many of the bodies basic physiological conditions and numerous diseases. This research has led to an increase in the use of CBD by consumers for a number of purposes including decrease in pain, inflammation and anxiety.
Is all CBD the same?
CBD molecule is the same no matter if it is produced in hemp or marijuana plants. The difference is the concentration of THC and other compounds.
What is the difference between full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate CBD?
Understanding the THC concentration in products can be confusing for consumers. The industry has come up with terminology that consumers can use to base their purchase decisions upon. Many products in the market contain THC. Those products are often labeled as "Full Spectrum" products. These products are generated by using oil that is generated directly from hemp without any remediation (removal) of THC.
Those products on average contain 1 mg of THC per 25 mg of CBD. However, this level may vary. It is important to look at the concentration in your product. These products can show up on a THC drug test.
"Broad Spectrum" products are made from hemp oil which has had the THC remediated but contain all the other compounds found in the hemp plant. These products often contain high levels of a compound called CBN due to the most common THC remediation process. This process degrades THC into CBN. CBN is a popular cannabinoid but is often associated with sleepiness. If your products contain CBN, you may want to watch for an increase in tiredness.
"Isolate" is purified CBD. It looks like a salt and generally has purity of over 99% CBD. You can think of it like purified sugar. It is simply CBD. This requires additional manufacturing steps. Basic Jane has elected to use isolate in its products. We find the product is very consistent allowing us to provide you the same product every time. As part of our formulating, we use other plant based essential oils such as lavender or citrus oil to aid in overall scent and product goals.
For example our relax products contain, lavender and clary sage to enable a feeling of relaxation and calming.
